Replacing the Dirt

Layers of rock and gravel can be seen by the change in color where the trench was dug

Remember all of that dirt that we removed from the Center of Hope site?  We replaced it with a lot of rock and gravel. Hundreds of truckloads were delivered.  It was built up, compacted, and brought to a level surface in preparation for the concrete foundation.  But, before we pour concrete, we need to do a few things.

The orange marking shows where the footings will be located

Our contractor, Slater & Son, is working with their subcontractor, Eddie Axner Construction, to lay out where the building will be built.  The orange markings in the photo above show where the footings will be and where the concrete pads for the structural steel will be located.  The purpose of footings are to support the foundation and prevent settling.

The crew reviewing the plans

Jackson, the construction superintendent, and Eddie Axner Construction's crew are following the drawings provided by Trilogy Architecture so that they lay out the building exactly as designed.

Trenches for footings, orange stakes outline the building

Eddie Axner Construction's staff dig down into the rock and gravel.  These trenches are where concrete will be poured for the footings for the building.  The orange stakes identified where the perimeter walls for the building will be located.

There will be more digging done next week for plumbing and other underground utilities.  It will look like a series of mazes before the concrete is poured.

Slater & Son Construction trailer is now on site!

The Slater & Son Construction office trailer was delivered last week.  Visitors to the site are required to check in at the trailer where they can pick up a safety vest and hard hat to wear on site.  Safety is a top priority on any construction site.

Please Note: Only authorized construction related visitors are permitted at the construction site.  For now, Hill Country staff and community members are asked to not go into the construction site to look around. You can drive by and look from the roadway but please do not walk inside the perimeter fence.  Later during construction, we will arrange for tour dates where you can visit the site to see the progress that has been made on the project.  We'll schedule that for a couple Saturdays in the future so that you can attend.  Until then, we'll keep you updated on the progress in this blog.  Thanks for reading!

A big Thank You to Eddie Axner Construction for removing the dirt, bringing in the rock & gravel and laying out the footprint for the Center of Hope!
